It’s all
a matter of perspective. This week I was visiting with
Mr. Lloyd Penley and he commented that he saw that Renee
had a birthday party at church. I said, “Yes sir, she
turned @#$% years old,” he said, “She’s just a baby!”
From the perspective of our children, Renee and I are
ancient. From our own perspective, we seem neither young
nor old. However, from Mr. Lloyd’s perspective we are
still wet behind the ears. It truly is a matter of one’s
perspective. It is funny how hard it is to read a
chapter in the Bible – and how easy it is to read Harry
Potter. It’s funny how “BIG” ten dollars looks when we
put it in the collection at church – and how “small” it
looks when we go to the gas pumps. It’s funny how we
can’t think of a thing to say to God in our prayers –
and how easy it is to talk for hours with a friend. What
is even funnier is that we look at ourselves and think
that we are good people. I’m not a murderer, I don’t
hurt children or animals, I don’t steal from my
neighbors and I come to church. From my perspective, I’m
a pretty good person.
However, what is not so funny is to look at things from
God’s perspective. When he sees me, he sees a sinner,
guilty and condemned. Romans 3:10 says that, “there is
none righteous, no not one”, 3:23 says that, “all have
sinned and fallen short” and 6:23 says that, “the wages
of sin is death”. It seems that from God’s perspective I
don’t measure up too well. The truth is we can never
live up to God’s standard on our own.
God knew that we would be unable to live to that
standard so He gave us His Son Jesus. When we have given
our lives to Christ, God sees us from the perspective of
the righteousness of Jesus. Paul said in Ephesians 2:8,
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and
that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.” So, you
see, it is a matter of perspective. Don’t trust your
eternity from any perspective other than Jesus.
